A Team Work Picture

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI)

Myers-Briggs based Workshop

'Most of us naturally prefer to work with people who think in the same way we do. Other people often seem to be living on a different planet and we can’t understand how their minds work.

However, if we work only with people who are like us, we run the risk of missing important things that we should have paid attention to, particularly if we are dealing with the unknown or unexpected. Teamwork is actually much more effective if we can harness and make use of the differences between team members.'

The original questionnaire was developed during World War II by Katharine Cook Briggs and Isabel Briggs-Myers. The tool was developed to help women entering industrial work for the first time understand what type of work they would be best suited to.

The following way of understanding and valuing difference is based on the Myers Briggs Type Indicator*, which was developed from the work of Carl Gustav Jung. It suggests that we all have within us four pairs of opposite preferences, but just as we develop more skill at writing with one hand than with the other, we develop more skill in using one preference than its opposite. When we meet someone with the opposite preference, we may find it quite difficult to understand their view of life or their line of reasoning.
