"Whatever the circumstances of your life, the understanding of type can make your perceptions clearer, your judgements sounder, and your life closer to your heart's desire."
Isabel Briggs Myers
The mother and daughter team of Katharine Cook Briggs, (born January 3rd 1875) and Isabel Briggs Myers, (born October 18th 1897) were responsible for developing this behavioural analysis tool which first saw light in 1942, as a means of helping women into industrial work during World War II. As this was a new area for women, as it was the men who worked in industry prior to the United States entering the war in 1941, an assessment questionnaire was formulated in order for women to find the work in which they would be "most comfortable and effective".
It was Katharine Cook Briggs who first found inspiration after reading Carl Jungs 1921 book 'Psychological Types' and recommended the work to Isabel who was a psychological theorist.
The initial questionnaire was later expanded into the MBTI format we know today in 1962 where it's main focus is on emphasising the value of naturally occuring differences.
