So, How Does The Feed Einstein Team Building Activity Work?
We've based this activity on the fact that Einstein was the name of Doc Brown's dog in the original Back To The Future film. Doc sets up a complicated sequence in order to complete a simple task - to Feed Einstein. The sequence is based on an alarm clock going off that then starts his coffee machine, makes some toast, and finally feeds Einstein!
What is a Heath Robinson / Rube Goldberg?
The generic name for this type of sequence is a Heath Robinson or Rube Goldberg Device. Heath Robinson (1872 - 1944) was a British illistrator famous for drawings of absurdly elaborate machines to achieve trivial goals.
'Heath Robinson' is now widely used as an adjective in art or engineering for a convaluted gadget that solves a simple problem in a rediculously complicated way.
Rube Goldberg (1883-1970) was a Pulitzer Prize winning cartoonist, sculptor and author. Best known for his "inventions", Rube's early years as an engineer led to his most acclaimed work.
A Rube Goldberg device takes a simple task and makes it extraordinarily complicated. The type of things that can be used include: an elaborate set of arms, wheels, gears, paper runs, towers, marble runs, handles, cups and rods, put in motion by balls, dominoes, buckets, boots, paddles and live animals! (Only kidding!)
Rube had solutions for How To Get The Cotton Out Of An Aspirin Bottle, imagined a Self-Operating Napkin, and created a Simple Alarm Clock - to name just a few of his hilariously depicted drawings. The promise and pitfalls of modern technology make Rube Goldberg's inventions even more relevant now than when they were originally created. All we expect you to do is simply ring a bell!
