Chocolate Week - 8th Oct - 14th Oct
The UK's biggest chocolate celebration kicks off today with the start of Chocolate Week! Most of us love nothing more than a scrummy chocolate treat to get us through the day, but where did our love affair with chocolate begin?
The ancient tribes of Mexico and Central America were the first to make chocolate by mixing ground cacao seeds to make a spicy, frothy drink which they called chocolatl. Spanish explorer Hernando Cortez brought chocolate to Europe, sweetening the bitter taste with cane sugar.
By 1520 the cocoa drink reached Britain, and the first chocolate house opened in London in 1657. Businessmen and the wealthy would congregate to conduct business and socialise over a cup of chocolate.
Some of the most famous confectioners in this country are the Quaker families Fry, Rowntree and Cadbury. Joseph Fry, of Fry & Sons, produced the world's first chocolate bar in 1847 by mixing sugar, cocoa powder and cocoa butter. In 1875 a Swiss manufacturer found a way to combine cocoa powder and cocoa butter with sugar and dried milk powder to produce the first milk chocolate.
