Clay Shooting Tips - The Stance and Hold

Here are our six top tips for improving your clay shooting results.

Tip 1: Stance
Your body should be facing towards the 'break zone' - the point where you want to pull the trigger. If you are taking a bird coming from the side of you, turn your upper body to where you can first see the clay clearly and hold the gun there. Then direct your eyes to where it's still a blur. You can then 'unwind' into your shot.

Tip 2: Shoulder level
Imagine your upper body as a tank turret - it moves independently of your lower body and remember you should have your body facing the 'break zone' when you want to take your shot.

Tip 3: 3 points of contact
To control the gun and the recoil, we need three positive contact points - shoulder, cheek and front hand. The front hand is often overlooked but is really important to control the tip of the gun.

Tip 4: Body position
Always keep your weight well forward. Keep the back straight and have the weight primarily on the ball of the front foot.

Tip 5: Head position
The cheek should be tight on the stock and give you a view in a straight line down to the foresight with little of no rib visible. As you move the gun, it's important that this view doesn't change.

Tip 6: Swing through
Don't stop your swing as you pull the trigger. Keep the fluid movement of the gun going until the shot is well on it's way to the target. This should help reduce any shots behind a clay.
